Can I use a Zoom Lens to take macro shots?
This may sound stupid but I know I wont be able to get a macro lens for awhile. So, I was just wondering if I get the zoom lens can I use it for macro shots? Also what kind of quality will the pictures be and will it be exceedingly noticeable that a macro lens wasn’t used?
This is going to sound a little odd, but you’ll probably have better luck using a wide(ish) angle lens (let’s say something in the range of an 18-55mm) than you will with something like a 300mm lens. The wide angle, while it won’t give you the magnification you’re looking for, will allow you to get quite close to whatever your shooting and it will allow you some depth of field as you’re composing your shot…..something a zoom won’t allow you to do.
The zoom lens will certainly give you the magnification you’re looking for, but…..well, the other posters have answered that part fairly well already……the only thing I would add is that you will get almost NO depth of field out of a zoom lens if you’re shooting anything up close. I can tell you from personal experience though that you will probably end up pulling some hair out trying to make one lens act like another…..
