How to Choose the Best Rims for Your Basketball Goals   by Gregorio Harvey

Standard basketball rims are fixed to the backboard using a bracket and bolts. Any weight load on the rim must be withstood from the strength of the bracket and bolts alone. Repeated dunking or hanging on the rim can results in the loosening of the bolts, and erosion of the backboard material.

If the hoop is intended for small children who will never jump high enough to physically touch the rim or mesh, then a standard rim will be sufficient. That’s because the only wear and tear will come from contact with the basketball, not with the players.

Just remember, those young children who may currently be barely able to throw a ball to the level of a seven foot rim may someday become six-footers with a 35-inch vertical jump, who can pound tomahawk dunks into a regulation-height hoop. For such players, a standard rim may not be the best option in terms of durability and safety. If you think the users may someday develop the ability to touch the rim or mesh, then a breakaway rim would be a better choice.

BREAKAWAY RIMS
If the users of the rim will be players who are older, stronger, taller, more experienced, and will be capable of touching the net, rim, or dunking the ball, then a breakaway rim is be your best bet.

Breakaway rims are constructed with a spring system that absorbs some of the force of a dunk and reducing the stress on the connecting bracket and bolts. When weight is applied to the rim, the rim “gives.” While breakaway basketball rims are more expensive than standard rims – in fact, sometimes twice as expensive – they greatly increase the durability of a basketball goal system in situations in which rough play is anticipated. They are also safer for players than standard rims because the fact that they give on dunks reduces impact on arms, wrists and hands.

MOUNTING BRACKETS
There are two types of mounting systems for basketball rims. Front and rear (or back) mounting.

Front mounting rim connect to the backboard using a bracket that includes a small rectangle of metal that typically angles downwards from the top of the rim. As a result your backboard must be tall enough to accommodate the height of that connecting bracket because the rim height will be slightly above the bottom edge of the backboard.

In contrast, the bracket for back mounting rims slide beneath the bottom edge of the backboard and connect at the back, with the bracket angling upward. As a result, the top of the rim is at the same height as the very bottom of the backboard. Such rims are more appropriate for smaller backboards in which maximizing backboard height is an issue.

OTHER VARIATIONS
Double rims are a nice variation that increases the strength of the rim system. Double rims feature two rims connected together, one on top of the other. They improve the rim’s ability to handle the weight load of players hanging from the mash, the rim, or dunking the ball.

CAVEAT
As we’ve mentioned above, the mounting bracket for your basketball rims may not be appropriate for all types of backboards. For example, a front mounting rim may not be appropriate for a smaller backboard with little height.
